Fraser Island
Some of the many highlights at Rainbow were:
catching a ferry to Tin Can Bay to hand-feed a dolphin called Mystique – very touristy but Tereza loved it;
meeting Wal and Vyv’s friends Jim and Pam who have been sailing around the world for the past 5 years. They have been to some amazing places and had some great stories to tell, including a pirate attack, involving a running gun battle with one yacht ramming the attackers boat!;
sundowners at the top of the Sandblower. A short walk through a forest revealed a massive dune with panoramic views over the sea and surrounding countryside. The colours of the sun were incredible – great fun was had taking photos of our shadows stretching over the sand;
a day tour to Fraser Island, the biggest sand island in the world with a 75 mile beach (used as a road), tropical rain forest (huge trees, vines, ferns, cycads, birds, lizards, snakes, eels, etc) and crystal blue freshwater lakes and streams. We swam in the biggest lake - Lake Mackenzie – the water was incredibly soft. We also encountered a very unimpressive stray dog – i.e. the dingo); and
exploring Noosa Heads, one of the nearby towns - small cute rock beaches, a wooden walkway which follows the coastline alongside a nature reserve filled with many colourful parrots.
The real menace of Rainbow Beach was the Sand Flies which leave welts like mosquito bites but itch twice as much and last twice as long. By the time we left, we could have been quarantined for chicken pox.
