Buenas Aires - City of the Dead

A visit to Buenas Aires wouldn’t have been complete without a visit to the Evita Peron museum. A woman loved by the working class and hated by the upper class presents a real enigma. Ricky “Great stuff for a conspiracy theorist like me. Just when she’s reaching her most popular and is considering running for vice president, she dies of cancer at the age of 33. Must have something to do with the Cold War”. Rather gruesome was learning that her body was preserved and used by Peron in his election campaigns. When he was overthrown in a coup, the body disappeared and was only discovered much later in a grave in Italy under a different name. When the body was finally returned to the family many years later it had been mutilated and raped!

We followed Evita to her final resting place in the Recoleta Cemetery. What a bizarre graveyard, it can only be described a City of the Dead. It comprises about two city blocks of tombs, graves and mausoleums commemorating the dearly departed, which included many famous people. Some of the mausoleums were so lavish they looked like they had been transplanted from ancient Greece and Rome. Tereza “The hair on my neck stood on end for most of the time we were there. There were eerie statues with haunting faces and others that belonged in Count Dracula’s Castle. To add to it, there were feral cats everywhere. Apparently, cats can see ghosts, so I supposed they were keeping the dead company.”
